Protein Garden

The Note The contemporary infrastructural complex of folding and measuring proteins depends on software tools for biological data handling, interpretation, and 3D visualization. Such tools power techno-colonial subsurface exploration with computational techniques and paradigms.

The Process For around 5 months continuously collecting data of protein folding sequences and interpreting it I have been creating a series of algorithms to simulate the growth of new protein structures. After the code was written I facilitated these computing processes in a garden site as a growth variable. I decided to investigates digital protein archive data, its algorithm interpretation engines biases, and material realities. In structural biology graphical visualizations helped me to better understand complex assemblies, nucleic acids and played a major role in the relationship between gathered data and myself. While visual depiction helped make sense of large amounts of complex numerical data that otherwise would be incomprehensible it is also by its essence prone to exclusion which leaves many interesting stories untold.

The installation was architected and dug with a shovel in a general-purpose garden in-between strawberries and dill. The construction was build and worked for 1 week. While still my software contains bugs and worms, it produced new protein structures which I am showcasing in the video artwork.
